The British had no idea they were giving a gift to the world when they popularized what was originally a Dutch and Flemish invention, the spirit known today as gin. With an appreciative nod to the European inventors as well as to the British, we at Settlers Spirits have distilled our own, unique, Australian Gin.
Developing Our Own, Australian Take on Gin
In developing our line of gins, we have become the local gin specialists. From our distillery in McLaren Vale, South Australia, Settlers Spirits are quickly becoming one of the premier, boutique craft gin distillers of Australia.
Visit our Distillery Door to taste and purchase our sloe gin, pink gin, yuzu gin and many other exciting flavours from our own distillery, or find them at your local bottleshop across the country, or even buy online. We have eleven varieties of flavoured gins and a range of Whisky, Rhum, Vodka and Liqueurs to choose from.
Gin Through the Ages
The original dry gin took the world by storm. This humble distillation of Juniper berries still manages to evoke memories of men with handlebar moustaches and women under parasols sipping gin in exotic locations around the world.
It was often mentioned fondly in stories by Rudyard Kipling, Ernest Hemingway and Somerset Maugham in settings as varied and romantic as India, Cairo, Cuba and Singapore.
Gin holds a significant place in the world today as well. The market for a fine, craft gin is steadily growing as an entire new-wave of adventurous mixologists discovers the joys of cocktails.
Martinis and Gin and Tonics are only the beginning. People old and young are re-discovering such classics as the Lime Rickey, the Singapore Sling, the Tom Collins and the Gimlet.
Leading the Australian Gin Market
As boutique gin distillers, we offer a masterclass at our distillery door on the subject of gin. After all, we are the local gin specialists. Join us and you can learn the history of this spirit as it was developed down through the centuries.
We will tell you the different distillation methods that led up to today’s version of the classic dry gin. We will also teach you how to judge a superior, craft gin from a mass-produced, inferior one.
Settlers Spirits distillery door offers gin tastings for individuals as well as private group tastings. We offer gin and cheese pairings as well. These events and our masterclass all take place in our distillery’s modern tasting room called The Distillery Door. It overlooks local vineyards with the Willunga Hills serving as a backdrop.
